Not all dogs are built the same and neither are all harnesses. Choosing the right harness for your specific breed makes a huge difference to comfort, safety and how well it actually fits. Here's what to look for by breed.
Cockapoos
Cockapoos are one of the most popular breeds in the UK and come in a huge range of sizes from tiny toy cockapoos to larger standard ones. Their curly coats can make harness chafing worse if the lining isn't soft enough.
What to look for:
- Adjustable chest AND neck sliders, cockapoos vary enormously in size
- Soft breathable lining, heir curly fur traps heat
- Sizes XS to M typically, measure before you buy
- Avoid harnesses that clip directly over the back of the neck, cockapoos can have sensitive skin.
Cavapoos
Cavapoos are generally small, gentle dogs with a soft wavy or curly coat. They tend to be light pullers but need a well-fitting harness to prevent any pressure on their delicate frames.
What to look for:
- Lightweight harness, heavy duty harnesses are unnecessary and uncomfortable for small breeds
- XXS to S typically
- Chest padding, Cavapoos have narrow, delicate chests
- Front D ring, useful for gentle redirection if needed
Dachshunds
Dachshunds are a unique challenge their long bodies and short legs mean standard harnesses often don't fit well. A harness that fits their neck may be too tight on their chest, or vice versa.
What to look for:
- Independent neck and chest adjustment essential for Dachshunds
- Longer body length, look for harnesses designed for their proportions
- Never use a collar only, their long spines are vulnerable to neck pressure
- Step-in harnesses can work well for Dachshunds as an alternative to over-the-head styles
The Golden Rule for All Breeds
Whatever your breed, always measure before you buy. Chest circumference and neck circumference are the two measurements that matter and always allow two fingers of space for a comfortable, safe fit.
