GENERAL HARNESS QUESTIONS

Q: Are dog harnesses better than collars?

A: For most dogs, yes. Harnesses distribute lead pressure across the chest and shoulders rather than concentrating it on the throat. This is particularly important for dogs that pull, brachycephalic breeds (flat-faced dogs like French Bulldogs and Pugs), puppies, and dogs with tracheal or neck issues. Collars are suitable for carrying ID tags but most vets now recommend harnesses as the primary lead attachment point.

Q: What is the best dog harness for a dog that pulls?

A: For dogs that pull, we recommend the Goody Paws® Tough Style Harness with the lead attached to the front D-ring. When a dog pulls forward, the front attachment redirects them to the side, reducing pulling without causing pain or discomfort. This is much more effective and comfortable than using a choke or prong collar. The Tough Style Harness is available in XS to XL.

Q: Can puppies wear harnesses?

A: Yes. Harnesses are recommended for puppies as they are safer than collars and help establish good lead walking habits from an early age. Our Adjustable Harness in XS or S suits most puppy breeds. Always supervise puppies wearing a harness and check the fit regularly as they grow quickly.

Q: How do I know if a harness is too tight?

A: If you cannot fit two fingers between the harness and your dog's body at any point, it is too tight. Signs of a too-tight harness include chafing or hair loss under the straps, your dog trying to remove the harness, restricted movement, difficulty breathing, or visible skin irritation.

Q: How do I know if a harness is too loose?

A: If your dog can step backwards out of the harness, or if the harness slides around during the walk, it is too loose. You should be able to fit two fingers under the straps but not slide your whole hand underneath easily.

Q: What is a front clip harness?

A: A front clip harness has a D-ring on the chest as well as the back. Attaching the lead to the front ring helps manage pulling, when a dog lunges forward, the front attachment redirects their momentum to the side rather than allowing them to pull with full force. All Goody Paws® harnesses feature both front and back D-rings.

Q: Can I leave a harness on my dog all day?

A: We do not recommend leaving a harness on your dog unattended for extended or short periods. Remove the harness at home between walks. Long-term harness wear without breaks can cause skin irritation, pressure sores, and matting of the fur under the straps.

Q: How often should I replace a dog harness?

A: Inspect your harness regularly. Replace it if you notice fraying stitching, cracked or damaged buckles, damaged D-rings, or if it no longer fits properly. With regular care and inspection, a quality harness should last 1 to 3 years depending on use.

Q: Should I attach the lead to the front or back D-ring?

A: Back D-ring, use for general walks where your dog walks nicely. Gives them more freedom of movement. Front D-ring, use if your dog pulls. When they lunge forward, the lead redirects them to the side rather than pulling against their strength. Many owners use the front ring for training and the back ring for relaxed walks.

SIZING QUESTIONS

Q: How do I measure my dog for a harness?

A: Measure around the widest part of your dog's chest just behind the front legs, this is your most important measurement. Also measure around the base of the neck. Always ensure you can fit two fingers between the tape measure and your dog's body. If in doubt, size up. Full measuring guide and size charts at goodypaws.co.uk/pages/size-chart.

Q: What if my dog is between sizes?

A: Always size up if your dog falls between two sizes. A slightly larger harness can be adjusted down to fit. A harness that is too small cannot be made larger and may cause discomfort.

Q: What size harness does a French Bulldog need?

A: Most French Bulldogs fit the Tough Style Harness in Small (neck 26–40cm, chest 43–56cm). Because French Bulldogs have deep chests, always use the chest as your primary measurement. Some Frenchies with a wider chest may need a Medium. Email us at info@goodypaws.co.uk with your dog's measurements and we will advise personally.

Q: What size harness does a Cockapoo need?

A: Most Standard Cockapoos fit the Tough Style Harness in Medium (chest 56–69cm) or the Adjustable Harness in M (chest 46–61cm). Miniature Cockapoos typically need Small. Always measure the chest first as Cockapoos vary quite a bit in size.

Q: What size harness does a Cavapoo need?

A: Most Cavapoos fit the Adjustable Harness in S or M, or the Tough Style Harness in S or M depending on their size and energy level. Measure the chest first. Email us if you are unsure and we will help you choose.

Q: What size harness does a Labrador need?

A: Most Labradors need the Tough Style Harness in Large (neck 40–61cm, chest 69–81cm) or Extra Large (neck 51–79cm, chest 81–107cm). Labradors vary significantly in size so always measure first.

GOODY PAWS® SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

Q: What is the difference between the Tough Style Harness and the Adjustable Harness?

A: The Tough Style Harness goes over the head and has one front clip and two back clips. three clips in total giving maximum security. It features metal D-rings, reflective trim, breathable padded mesh, and is machine washable at 30°C. Best for active dogs, strong pullers, and brachycephalic breeds. Available XS to XL. The Adjustable Harness goes over the head with one clip. It features neoprene fabric and breathable mesh lining. Best for smaller dogs, puppies, and everyday walks. Available XS to L.

CARE & SAFETY QUESTIONS

Q: How do I clean a Goody Paws harness?

A: Tough Style Harness, machine wash at 30°C, air dry. Do not tumble dry. Adjustable Harness wipe clean with a damp cloth. Do not machine wash. For both styles, check all buckles and D-rings after washing and before every walk.

Q: How do I check if my harness is still safe to use?

A: Before every walk, check the following all buckles click firmly and do not release accidentally, all D-rings are secure with no bending or cracking, all stitching is intact with no fraying, and the harness still fits correctly using the two-finger rule. Replace immediately if any of these fail.

Q: My dog keeps slipping out of the harness what should I do?

A: If your dog can back out of their harness, it is almost always a fitting issue. Tighten the chest straps first this is the most common cause of escape. If the harness is already at its tightest setting and your dog can still slip out, they may need a smaller size. Contact us at info@goodypaws.co.uk for help.

Q: The harness is rubbing under my dog's front legs, why?

A: Rubbing under the front legs is usually caused by a harness that is too big around the chest. Tighten the chest straps. If the problem continues, try sizing down. For brachycephalic breeds, the Tough Style Harness with its padded chest panel is less prone to rubbing.
