Most dog owners pick a harness based on how it looks. And honestly? We get it, there are some beautiful designs out there. But when your dog suddenly lunges at a squirrel, pulls hard on the lead or makes a bolt for the park gate, looks become the last thing on your mind.
The truth is, not all harnesses are built to handle those moments. So what should you actually be looking for and how do you know if your dog's current harness is up to the job?
Let's break it down.

What Makes a Dog Harness Actually Strong?
A strong, safe dog harness isn't just about the material it's made from. It's about how the whole thing is engineered together. Here are the key things to look for:
1. A Lockable Buckle System
A standard clip buckle can pop open under sudden pressure which is the last thing you want mid-walk. A lockable buckle requires a deliberate two-step action to release, meaning it won't accidentally come undone no matter how much your dog pulls, twists or wriggles.
The Blue Camo Tough Style Harness features a lockable buckle for exactly this reason maximum security, every single walk.
2. Multiple Adjustment Points
A harness that only adjusts at the chest is a harness that doesn't really fit. Every dog is different, barrel-chested, slim-waisted, long-bodied, short-necked and a great harness needs to accommodate all of them.
Look for adjustable sliders on both the neck AND the chest, on both sides. This gives you a truly custom fit that stays secure rather than shifting around during walks.
3. Front AND Back D Rings
A single D ring at the back gives you basic lead attachment. But if your dog pulls or is in training, a front D ring gives you steering control by gently redirecting their attention back to you rather than pulling against their chest.
The best harnesses offer both, giving you flexibility depending on the walk, the environment and your dog's behaviour that day.
4. Reflective Trim
Early morning walks. Evening strolls in winter. Late-night toilet trips. If your dog is outside in low light, visibility matters for their safety and yours. Reflective trim catches headlights and torchlight, making your dog visible from a distance.
It's a small detail that makes a genuinely big difference.
5. Premium Stitching and Breathable Materials
The stitching is what holds everything together under pressure. Premium double stitching at stress points where the D rings attach, where the straps meet the body is what separates a harness that lasts from one that doesn't.
Breathable mesh lining keeps your dog comfortable on longer walks, and easy clean materials mean muddy adventures don't mean ruined harnesses.

How to Find the Right Size
Getting the right fit is just as important as choosing the right harness. Here's how to measure your dog:
- Chest: Measure all the way around the widest point of the chest, just behind the front legs
- Neck: Measure around the base of the neck where the harness sits
Always allow approximately two fingers' width between the harness and your dog for a comfortable fit. If your dog is between sizes, we always recommend sizing up.
